Engagement photo makeup: a romantic Paris shoot

Paris is the perfect place to be whisked away for a romantic photoshoot. When Rupi and her fiancé planned theirs among the city’s most famous streets, I created her soft, elegant engagement photo makeup and hair. Here’s exactly what I did, along with my best tips for looking like yourself, only more polished, in your own engagement photos.

The short version

  • Engagement photo makeup should complement your outfit and location, not compete with them.
  • A soft smoky eye, a cool-toned blush and a glossy lip photograph beautifully outdoors.
  • Half-up curls with flexible hold stay pretty while you walk, sit and pose all day.
  • Your engagement shoot is a great chance to test ideas for your wedding look.

Engagement photo makeup for Rupi’s Paris shoot

Rupi and her fiancé, joined by her sister and a friend, spent the day capturing beautiful moments as they explored the streets of Paris. What a wonderful idea! In this photo, for example, the Arc de Triomphe makes the backdrop.

Before we started, Rupi described her vision for the day. Her dress was a showstopper, covered in delicate embroidery, so we didn’t want her hair and makeup to compete with it. Instead, the goal was to complement the whole look and keep her feeling like herself, from gown to gloss.

Her engagement photo makeup, step by step

Every choice came back to the dress and the soft Paris light, so this is how the look came together.

01

Start with the vision

First, we talked through her style, her dress and the locations, so every decision supported the overall mood of the shoot.

02

Create a soft smoky eye

Next, I used MAKE UP FOR EVER professional eyeshadows in champagne and cool mauve tones, with just a touch of black at the lash line (more on building a smokey eye) for definition.

03

Add a cool-toned blush

Then, to keep the focus on her eyes, I chose a soft blush with cool undertones, which echoed the mauve shadow and the colours in her dress.

04

Finish with a blush-pink lip

After that, a lipstick in the perfect blush tone, topped with a touch of gloss, gave her lips a fresh, romantic glow on camera.

05

Set the hair for a day out

Finally, I pulled half of her hair back and curled the rest, leaving soft pieces to frame her face. A dry spray and a flexible working spray kept it in place without making it stiff.

Engagement photo hairstyles to pair with your makeup

Usually, an engagement shoot means walking, sitting on steps and a little wind. These styles look natural in motion and hold up for hours.

Romantic and easy

Half-up curls

  • Like Rupi’s, with soft pieces around the face
  • Keeps hair out of your eyes when the breeze picks up
  • Shows off earrings as well as your neckline

Relaxed and natural

Loose waves

  • Perfect for beaches, fields and parks, especially in summer
  • Set with flexible spray, so it still moves
  • Easy to refresh with your fingers, so no brush needed

Polished and timeless

Low bun

  • Ideal if the forecast is windy or rainy
  • Pairs well with statement earrings
  • Looks elegant in city as well as studio shoots

Modern and chic

Sleek ponytail

  • Great when your outfit is minimal
  • Stays put, even through outfit changes
  • Lets your makeup take centre stage

Engagement photo makeup tips from a makeup artist

Whether you hire an artist or do it yourself, these are the details I pay most attention to on a shoot.

Natural, not flat

Skin

  • Choose a satin foundation, so skin still looks like skin
  • Use powder only where you get shiny, so the skin keeps its glow
  • Skip heavy SPF formulas under flash photography

Soft definition

Eyes

  • Blend shadows until there are no hard edges
  • Add lashes, but choose ones that suit your eye shape
  • Use waterproof mascara, since wind and laughter make eyes water

One shade deeper

Lips

  • Pick a colour slightly richer than your natural lips
  • Add gloss only to the centre, so it glows without looking sticky
  • Pack your lipstick for touch-ups when you change locations

Plan it together

Outfit

  • Coordinate your makeup with your outfit colours
  • Bring a second look, because variety makes the gallery richer
  • Choose comfortable shoes if you’ll be walking between spots

Should you book a pro for your engagement photo makeup?

If you can, yes. Professional hair and makeup hold up through hours of walking and posing, and they’re designed to read well on camera. As a result, you can relax and enjoy the day with your partner instead of checking a mirror.

Better still, an engagement shoot is a lovely opportunity to try ideas for your wedding look. Many brides plan their bridal preview close to their engagement session, so they can see the look in real photos. That way, every shade and style is fine-tuned long before the wedding.

Engagement photo makeup: your questions

Should I get my makeup done for engagement photos?

It’s worth it, because engagement photos are often the first professional photos of you as a couple, and professional makeup makes sure your skin, eyes and lips look polished in every light.

What makeup looks best in engagement photos?

Generally, soft, well-blended makeup that suits your outfit and location. A satin base, softly defined eyes, a natural blush and a lip one shade deeper than your own usually photographs best.

Can I use my engagement shoot as a bridal makeup trial?

Yes, it’s a smart idea. You’ll see how the look reads in professional photos and can adjust anything before the wedding. Just remember to plan it well ahead of your wedding date.

How long does engagement photo makeup last?

With good skin prep, primer and setting spray, it should last the whole shoot. Bring blotting papers and your lipstick for touch-ups between locations.
