Smokey eye wedding makeup for a Paris bride

Paris is made for romance, so when Margarita showed me her gown, I knew her look had to be glamorous to match. She wanted to try a smokey eye, and it was the perfect choice. Here’s exactly how I created her smokey eye wedding makeup, as well as how to decide whether a smoky look is right for your own day.

The look at a glance

  • Eyes Champagne, grey, warm brown and black, blended into a soft-edged smoke
  • Cheeks A warm cream blush, pressed in rather than swept on
  • Lips A neutral lipstick with peach undertones
  • Hair A classic updo with soft curls framing the face
  • Hold A dry texture spray, followed by a flexible working spray

A Paris wedding with smokey eye makeup

Margarita and Jon chose Paris for their wedding, and the city delivered: soft grey light through tall windows, rooftops all around and the Eiffel Tower just visible from the getting-ready room. Her gown was elegant and dramatic, so a barely-there makeup look would have disappeared next to it.

Margarita wanted to try a smokey eye, which I thought was a perfect fit. Many brides worry that a smoky look will feel too heavy, but in reality, a well-blended smoky eye looks soft in person and beautifully defined in photos, especially in black and white. The secret is in the shades you choose and how carefully you blend them. When she walked out, the groom’s eyes grew wide. Congratulations again to a wonderful couple!

How I built her smokey eye wedding makeup, step by step

I used MAKE UP FOR EVER professional eyeshadows in four shades. This order keeps the look smooth and stops it from turning muddy.

01

Prime and set the lid

First, a thin layer of eye primer, then a dusting of translucent powder, so every shade blends easily and lasts through a long day.

02

Lay a champagne base

Next, champagne across the whole lid and just under the brow bone. It brightens the eye and gives the darker shades something to melt into.

03

Build depth with grey and brown

Then, warm brown in the crease and soft grey on the outer half of the lid, blended in small circles until there are no hard edges.

04

Smudge black at the lash line

Black goes only where you want the most depth: tight to the upper lashes and the outer corner, then softened with a clean brush.

05

Finish the lashes

Finally, curled lashes, waterproof mascara and a touch of champagne in the inner corners to keep the eyes open and bright.

Balancing smokey eye wedding makeup: skin, cheeks and lips

With so much happening on the eyes, the rest of the face needs to stay calm. I kept her skin luminous but not shiny, with concealer only where she needed it.

On the cheeks, I pressed in a soft, warm cream blush, which looks like a natural flush rather than powder. For the lips, I chose a neutral lipstick with peach undertones, so all the attention stayed on her eyes.

The hair: a romantic classic updo

Margarita has gorgeous long hair, so we decided to sweep it up into a classic updo. To soften the shape, we left a few loose curls around her face, which kept the style romantic rather than severe.

For hold, I prepped her hair with a dry texture spray, then finished with a flexible working spray. As a result, the style stayed in place all day while still moving naturally.

A smoky look suits more brides than you might think. These are the questions I ask at every trial before we decide.

Choose it if…

When it shines

  • Your ceremony or reception is in the evening, or in a ballroom
  • Your gown is glamorous, beaded or structured
  • You love defined eyes in your everyday makeup
  • Some of your photos will be in black and white

Consider instead…

Go softer

  • A diffused brown smoke for daytime or garden weddings
  • A rosy or mauve smoke if you prefer a romantic look
  • Smudged liner only, if you have hooded eyes
  • A shimmer lid with defined lashes for a minimal look

By eye colour

Your shades

  • Brown eyes: bronze, plum and deep chocolate
  • Blue eyes: taupe, copper and warm grey
  • Green eyes: plum, burgundy and warm brown
  • Hazel eyes: olive, bronze and soft gold

Make it last

Tear-proof

  • Prime the lids and set them with powder
  • Choose waterproof liner and mascara
  • Keep the lower lash line soft, not heavy
  • Carry a cotton bud for quick fixes

Testing your smokey eye wedding makeup at your trial

A smokey eye is the look I’m most careful to test, because the difference between soft and too heavy is a matter of a few brushstrokes. At your preview, bring photos of looks you love, a picture of your gown and some details about the venue.

The setting changes the right intensity. For example, a garden ceremony usually calls for a lighter, browner smoke, whereas an elegant ballroom can carry more depth. We’ll also test how the products wear on your skin, so you know they’ll hold up through the weather, the hugs and the happy tears.

Smokey eye wedding makeup: your questions

Is a smokey eye a good choice for wedding makeup?

Yes, when it’s blended softly and balanced with luminous skin and a neutral lip. It photographs beautifully, especially in evening light and black-and-white images, and it suits glamorous gowns and venues.

Will a smokey eye look too heavy in my wedding photos?

Not if it’s built gradually. Usually, I keep the darkest shade close to the lash line and blend the edges until they disappear. We test the intensity at your trial and take photos, so you see how it reads on camera.

What colours work best for a bridal smokey eye?

Champagne, taupe, warm brown and grey are the most flattering starting points. Then we add depth with black, plum or bronze, depending on your eye colour and your wedding palette.

How do I stop my smokey eye from smudging if I cry?

Ask for primer, waterproof liner and waterproof mascara, and keep the lower lash line soft. Also pack a cotton bud and a little powder in your bridal emergency kit for quick fixes.
