Boho wedding hair and makeup in the lavender fields
I was ecstatic to create a bohemian-inspired look for a photo shoot among a sea of lavender fields in the south of France. Since the bride-to-be had chosen a long, flowing white dress, it became the starting point for everything. Below, you’ll see how I created her boho wedding hair and radiant makeup, plus how to bring the same free-spirited style to your own day.

The short version
- Her boho wedding hair was a soft set of curls, brushed out into easy waves with lots of movement.
- A gold coin headpiece added a touch of elegance and finished the bohemian theme.
- The makeup was understated yet lovely: delicate highlighting for radiant skin and neutral definition.
- Boho looks work best when the hair moves freely and the skin looks like skin.
Boho wedding hair among the lavender
The backdrop for this photo session was a field of lavender in full bloom, which is about as romantic as a setting can be. Meanwhile, the bride’s long, flowing white dress, with its lace details and a gold embellished waist, set the tone for the whole style.
My goal was to bring out her innate beauty, so that the look complemented both the bride and the natural beauty of the setting. Overall, working with the couple in such a beautiful place was such a delight. Planning a shoot of your own? See my tips on engagement photo makeup.
Her boho wedding hair and makeup, step by step
Every step kept the look soft and effortless. After all, a boho style should never look overdone.
01
Set soft curls
First, I created delicate curls throughout her long hair, which gave the style a strong base for movement.
02
Brush them out
Next, I gently brushed out the curls into easy, romantic waves with lots of movement.
03
Add a headpiece
Then I added a gold coin headpiece across her hairline, which brought a touch of elegance and suited the bohemian theme.
04
Highlight the skin
After that, I applied delicate highlighting, so her skin looked radiant in every photo.
05
Define with neutrals
Finally, neutral colours on the eyes gave her wonderful definition, keeping the look understated yet lovely.
Boho wedding hair ideas for your day
Boho hair is all about texture, movement and a little bit of undone romance. So, these are the styles I love most.
Free and romantic
Loose waves
- Soft curls, then brushed out for movement
- Also lovely with a headpiece or a hair vine
- Especially ideal for outdoor and garden weddings
Soft and practical
Half-up texture
- The front pulled back, so it stays off your face
- Pretty with braids or tucked flowers
- Great with bell sleeves as well as lace
Relaxed yet secure
Undone low bun
- Instead, a loose, textured bun at the nape
- Plus face-framing pieces for softness
- A smart choice for windy or hot days

Boho makeup that glows
Above all, boho bridal makeup should look fresh, warm and natural. For that reason, I focus on skin first: a light base, delicate highlighting on the high points and a little warmth on the cheeks.
On the eyes, however, I prefer soft neutrals and defined lashes rather than heavy liner. To finish, a rosy nude or tinted lip keeps everything in harmony with flowing hair and natural surroundings.
Making boho wedding hair last outdoors
Loose styles look effortless. Even so, they need a little planning to last all day outside. Getting married abroad? Read my guide to destination wedding hair and makeup.
01
Start with texture
First, a texturising product helps waves hold their shape, especially if your hair is fine or very smooth.
02
Use flexible hold
Next, choose a flexible spray instead of a stiff one, so the waves still move naturally in photos.
03
Secure the headpiece
Then pin your headpiece or hair vine discreetly, so it stays in place through hugs and the breeze.
04
Plan for the weather
After that, think about heat, humidity and wind. In those cases, a half-up style or an undone bun can be more reliable.
05
Pack a few essentials
Finally, keep pins, a small brush and a travel-size spray in your touch-up kit for quick refreshes.

What is boho wedding hair?
Usually, it’s a relaxed, textured style with movement, such as loose waves, a half-up look or an undone bun, often finished with flowers, a hair vine or a headpiece.
Can I wear a headpiece with loose waves?
Yes. In fact, a gold headpiece across the hairline, like this bride’s, is a beautiful boho touch. Then we’ll pin it securely, so it stays put while your hair moves freely.
What makeup suits a boho wedding?
Generally, fresh, glowing skin, soft neutral eyes and a natural lip. After all, the aim is to look like yourself, only more radiant.
Will loose wedding hair last all day?
With the right prep, texture and flexible hold, usually, yes. However, if it’s very hot, humid or windy, a half-up style or a loose bun is a safer choice.
