Airbrush makeup: what it is, what it isn’t and if it’s right for you
Airbrush makeup is one of the most talked-about options for brides, and also one of the most misunderstood. So, what is it really about? Below, I answer the questions I hear most often, so you can decide between airbrush and traditional makeup with confidence.

The short version
- Airbrush is a finely milled liquid foundation, sprayed onto the skin with an airbrush gun.
- It gives light to medium coverage with a real-skin finish, so it’s ideal for HD photos and video.
- It comes in waterproof formulas, which suit long days, tears and humid weather.
- For fuller coverage, I build with traditional makeup first and finish with airbrush on top.
What is airbrush makeup?
It’s a finely milled, liquid formula applied with an airbrush gun. Instead of a brush or sponge, a gentle stream of air mists the foundation onto your skin in very thin layers.
As a result, it feels light as air and leaves the skin with a real-skin finish. Light to medium coverage, comfortable wear and a smooth look on camera also make it an ideal option for HD photography and video.

What airbrush makeup isn’t
Airbrush foundation is not the same as the Photoshop technique that’s also called airbrushing. That confusion comes up a lot, so it’s worth clearing up.
Makeup is wonderful because it lets a skilled artist highlight and enhance your features. However, it isn’t a magic wand. It won’t tuck, lift or erase wrinkles, and it won’t melt twenty years away. Instead, it helps you look like the best version of yourself.
Corrie’s tip
The method matters less than the artist. A knowledgeable, skilled makeup artist will choose airbrush, traditional makeup or a mix of both, depending on your skin and your day.
Is airbrush makeup waterproof?
It can be. Airbrush foundation comes in both non-waterproof and waterproof formulas. The waterproof version is particularly useful for weddings, all-day photoshoots and humid locations, because it stays put through heat, happy tears and hugs. Planning a hot July wedding? That said, traditional makeup can also become long-wearing and water-resistant with the right primers, products and setting techniques. In other words, you don’t need airbrush to have makeup that lasts.
How much coverage does airbrush makeup give?
Airbrush foundation is thin by design, with light to medium coverage. On its own, it’s perfect if you’d like to even out your skin tone and get moderate coverage that still looks like skin.
If you’re looking for full coverage, for example because of scarring, acne or hyperpigmentation, I start with traditional makeup to correct and conceal. Then I use airbrush as the final step, which blends everything into a seamless, soft-focus finish.
Airbrush makeup or traditional makeup?
Both methods create beautiful results, so the right choice depends on your skin, your preferences and your wedding day. Here’s how they compare.
Light and seamless
Airbrush
- Thin layers with a real-skin, HD-friendly finish
- Light to medium coverage that you can build
- Waterproof formulas, especially for long days
Flexible and familiar
Traditional
- Brushes and sponges, plus products you know
- Coverage from sheer to full, as well as targeted concealing
- Easy to touch up yourself during the day
Full coverage, soft finish
Both together
- First, traditional makeup corrects and conceals
- Then a fine airbrush layer blends it all together
- Great for scarring, acne or pigmentation

Choosing airbrush makeup for your wedding day
If you’re curious about trying it for your wedding, these are the steps I recommend.
01
Book a trial
First, try airbrush at your bridal preview, so you can see the finish in person and in photos before the big day.
02
Share your skin concerns
Next, tell your artist about dryness, texture, redness or breakouts. That way, we can decide together if you need airbrush, traditional makeup or both.
03
Think about your day
Then consider the season, the venue and how many hours you’ll be photographed, since long or humid days are where a waterproof formula really shines.
04
Choose your package
After that, add airbrush to your booking. It’s included in the Tailored and Curated Experiences on our bridal packages, and you can add it to À la carte bookings.
05
Plan touch-ups
Finally, keep blotting papers, powder and your lipstick close in your bridal emergency kit. Airbrush lasts beautifully, but a quick blot before the reception is still a good idea.

What is airbrush makeup?
It’s a finely milled liquid foundation applied with an airbrush gun in very thin layers. It gives light to medium coverage with a natural, real-skin finish that looks great in HD photos and video.
Is airbrush makeup better than traditional makeup?
Not necessarily. Both can look beautiful and last all day. Airbrush suits brides who want a light, seamless finish, while traditional makeup offers more coverage options. A skilled artist matters more than the method.
Can airbrush makeup cover acne or scarring?
On its own, airbrush gives light to medium coverage. For acne, scarring or pigmentation, I correct and conceal with traditional makeup first, then finish with airbrush for a smooth, soft-focus look.
How much does airbrush makeup cost for a wedding?
Airbrush is $65 per person as an add-on, and it’s included in the Tailored and Curated Experiences. You’ll find every option on our bridal packages page.
